Understanding Thermal Properties of Ceramics

Provider AMRICC Academy

Course description

This one-day course provides a comprehensive introduction to the thermal behaviour of ceramic materials, focusing on thermal conductivity, heat transfer theory, and thermal shock performance.

Participants will explore both fundamental physics (Fourier heat transfer, phonon behaviour) and practical measurement techniques, including Laser Flash Analysis and associated test methods. The course also examines how thermal properties influence real-world applications such as high-temperature systems, electrical uses, energy devices, and structural ceramics.

The day combines theory, worked examples, and applied context to help participants understand how thermal properties impact material selection, performance, and failure in industry.

This workshop includes practical demonstrations in the Lucideon Labs and AMRICC Centre.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand thermal conductivity and how heat is transferred in ceramic materials
  • Apply Fourier’s Law to describe conductive heat flow and thermal gradients
  • Explain the role of phonon scattering and solid-state physics in thermal behaviour
  • Interpret how temperature, composition, and structure affect thermal conductivity
  • Describe and compare measurement techniques, including Laser Flash Analysis and supporting methods
  • Calculate or interpret thermal conductivity using diffusivity, density, and heat capacity relationships
  • Understand thermal shock mechanisms and how thermal/mechanical properties influence failure
  • Thermal behaviour
  • Heat transfer
  • Conductivity analysis
  • Thermal testing
  • Failure prevention
  • Materials scientists and engineers working with ceramic materials
  • Process and manufacturing engineers involved in high-temperature applications
  • Design engineers selecting materials for thermal performance and reliability
  • R&D professionals developing advanced materials or components
  • Quality and testing engineers interpreting thermal property data
  • Early-career professionals building a foundation in ceramic behaviour
  • 1 day of in-person training, held at Lucideon's Headquarters and the AMRICC Centre in Staffordshire.
  • This course includes a tour of Lucideon’s testing facilities and the AMRICC Centre, a unique open-access facility that translates materials, processes and technologies into real-world products and solutions through the commercialisation of innovative ideas.
  • Practical demonstrations and hands on activities form part of the course. Please ensure you attend wearing closed toe shoes, any further required PPE will be provided for you.
  • Refreshments and lunch will be provided.
