Slip Casting and Rheology

Provider AMRICC Academy

Course description

This two-day course provides a practical and applied understanding of rheology and slip casting, focusing on how fluid control influences ceramic processing, product quality, and production efficiency.

Participants will explore the interactions between materials, water, and chemical additives, and how these relationships affect the behaviour of ceramic slips used in forming and glazing processes.

Through a combination of e-learning and hands-on practical sessions, participants will learn how to measure, adjust, and control slip properties to produce high-quality, consistent components, including large and complex shapes.

The course emphasises real-world problem solving, helping participants to optimise casting performance and reduce defects in production environments.

  • Understand the principles of rheology and its role in ceramic processing
  • Measure and adjust slip density to achieve optimal casting conditions
  • Evaluate and correct the fluid properties of ceramic slips
  • Understand the fundamentals of the slip casting process
  • Explain how deflocculants influence slip behaviour and casting performance
  • Identify common casting defects and apply methods to eliminate them
  • Rheology control
  • Slip casting

This course is suitable for:

  • Engineers, technicians, and operators involved in slip casting or glaze preparation
  • Manufacturing and production staff working in ceramics
  • Materials scientists and R&D professionals working with ceramic bodies and slips
  • Process engineers focused on improving quality and efficiency
  • Professionals from adjacent industries looking to develop ceramics processing knowledge

Pre-requisite:
A basic understanding of ceramic materials (body and glaze) is recommended. Introductory courses are available for those new to ceramics to complete before attending this course.

  • 2 days of in-person training, held at Lucideon's Headquarters and the AMRICC Centre in Staffordshire.
  • This course includes a tour of Lucideon’s testing facilities and the AMRICC Centre, a unique open-access facility that translates materials, processes and technologies into real-world products and solutions through the commercialisation of innovative ideas.
  • Practical demonstrations and hands on activities form part of the course. Please ensure you attend wearing closed toe shoes, any further required PPE will be provided for you.
