Scale-up and Technology Transfer Risks

Provider Britest

Course description

Development of the conceptual models for a process are essential to adequately assess the risk when scaling up an operation. Delivered over 3 x 2-3 hour sessions, the course employs the fundamentals of scale-up science and describes the risk assessment methodology in terms of safety and environment, by looking at the whole process design, and the effects that scale up will have on the equipment, environment and operational parameters. The transfer of technology to different conditions (increased volume, reduced time etc) will affect the operational aspects of raw material handling, mixing, drying, filtration, energy efficiency and waste management, for example.

  • Understand the factors that must be considered for safe and successful process scale-up to pilot or production level.
  • Be aware that differences of equipment and site conditions can lead to process problems.
  • Wide knowledge of physics, chemistry and engineering science will help the team spot issues and conduct effective risk assessment studies.
  • The critical importance of preparation before changes are made.
  • Length Scale effects
  • Safety and Environment impacts for larger volumes of materials
  • Timescales and other practicalities
  • Scale sensitive phenomena
  • Planning
  • Risk assessment and management

If you are working in ceramics or material science and have an interest in learning more about scale-up and technology transfer, this course will be of benefit to you. There are no specific prerequisites but having an objective or relevant area of interest in scale-up or technology transfer will enrich the learning experience and support practical engagement with the course material.

Some examples of those who would benefit most include: R&D management, scientists and technicians; process technicians, production operatives, chemists and materials scientists and technical ceramicists.

A total of 3 online learning modules, 2-3 hours each, led by a Britest facilitator.

The modules included in this course are:

2.1 Assessing the risk

2.2 Mitigation of risk through process understanding (Scale-up science)

2.3 Mitigation of risk through process understanding (Unit operations)
