Mechanical Testing of Ceramics

Provider AMRICC Academy

Course description

This one-day course introduces the mechanical behaviour and testing of ceramic materials, focusing on how their brittle nature influences performance, reliability, and failure.

The course covers key testing methods including flexural strength, hardness testing, Weibull statistics, fracture toughness, and non-destructive evaluation techniques. Delegates will explore both the underlying material science (structure–process–property relationships) and the practical application of standardised test methods used in industry.

The day combines theory, worked examples, and practical insight to support material selection, quality control, and failure analysis in ceramic components.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how ceramic structure, processing, and defects influence mechanical performance
  • Explain how and why ceramics fail under mechanical loading
  • Calculate and interpret flexural strength
  • Understand and apply Weibull statistics to assess probability of failure
  • Describe and compare hardness testing methods
  • Understand the fundamentals of fracture mechanics and fracture toughness (KIC)
  • Explain non-destructive testing methods
  • Mechanical behaviour
  • Strength testing
  • Failure analysis
  • Hardness testing
  • Reliability assessment
  • Materials scientists and engineers working with ceramic materials
  • Mechanical and design engineers involved in component performance and reliability
  • Manufacturing and process engineers responsible for product quality and production outcomes
  • Quality control and testing engineers carrying out or interpreting mechanical testing
  • R&D professionals developing ceramic materials or components
  • Early-career professionals needing a foundation in ceramic mechanical behaviour and testing
  • 1 day of in-person training, held at Lucideon's Headquarters and the AMRICC Centre in Staffordshire.
  • This course includes a tour of Lucideon’s testing facilities and the AMRICC Centre, a unique open-access facility that translates materials, processes and technologies into real-world products and solutions through the commercialisation of innovative ideas.
  • Practical demonstrations and hands on activities also form part of the course. Please ensure you attend wearing closed toe shoes, any further required PPE will be provided for you.
  • Refreshments and lunch will be provided
