Course description

This one-day course provides a practical introduction to ceramic glazes, covering their composition, preparation, application, and firing behaviour.

Participants will explore the key types of glazes, raw materials, and formulation principles, gaining an understanding of how glaze composition influences surface finish, performance, and processability.

The course includes a hands-on practical session, where participants will prepare glazes, adjust their properties, and apply them using industry-relevant techniques such as dipping and spraying. The session concludes with an overview of the firing process and how it affects final glaze outcomes.

1 day of in-person training, held at Lucideon's Headquarters and the AMRICC Centre in Staffordshire.
This course includes a tour of Lucideon’s testing facilities and the AMRICC Centre, a unique open-access facility that translates materials, processes and technologies into real-world products and solutions through the commercialisation of innovative ideas.
Practical demonstrations and hands on activities of glaze preparation. Please ensure you attend wearing closed toe shoes, any further required PPE will be provided for you.
Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Meet the trainer

Ian Campbell

Ian has worked in industry for over 40 years, amassing invaluable experience in ceramics, earthenware, bone china, and glassware.

He specialises in general ceramic materials assessment, process development and product assessment. This is complemented by his skills in glass composition development for ceramic glaze decoration and technical applications such as consumer goods and healthcare.

In addition to his regular work, he has been recognised as inventor on patent applications for special glaze composition, and been granted patents for controlled release technologies.

Outside of work, Ian enjoys household DIY, gardening, and craft pottery.
