Advanced Ceramic Processing

Provider AMRICC Academy

Course description

This intensive 2.5-day course provides a comprehensive, end-to-end understanding of advanced ceramic processing, covering the complete manufacturing journey from raw materials through to formed components and thermal processing.

Participants will explore how processing decisions influence microstructure, defects, and final performance, with a strong focus on powder characteristics, forming techniques, drying behaviour, and heat treatment.

The course combines theory, practical insight, and applied examples, enabling participants to understand how to select and optimise manufacturing routes for real-world applications.

  • Understand the complete ceramic manufacturing pathway from powders to finished components
  • Explain how processing influences structure and material properties
  • Evaluate powder characteristics (particle size, shape, distribution, flowability)
  • Compare dry and wet forming techniques and their applications
  • Understand milling, granulation, and powder preparation methods
  • Select appropriate forming methods (pressing, casting, extrusion, injection moulding, additive manufacturing)
  • Understand drying behaviour and how to prevent defects
  • Explain the principles of binder burnout, sintering, and heat treatment
  • Apply knowledge to make informed process and material selection decisions
  • Powder processing
  • Ceramic forming
  • Manufacturing routes
  • Defect control
  • Process optimisation
  • Engineers working in ceramic manufacturing or advanced materials processing
  • Process and production engineers responsible for component manufacture
  • Materials scientists and R&D engineers developing ceramic materials
  • Technicians working with powders, forming, or lab-scale processing
  • Engineers transitioning into ceramics from adjacent sectors
  • Early-career professionals needing a practical understanding of processing
  • 2 days of in-person training, held at Lucideon's Headquarters and the AMRICC Centre in Staffordshire.
  • This course includes a tour of Lucideon’s testing facilities and the AMRICC Centre, a unique open-access facility that translates materials, processes and technologies into real-world products and solutions through the commercialisation of innovative ideas.
  • Practical demonstrations and hands on activities form part of the course. Please ensure you attend wearing closed toe shoes, any further required PPE will be provided for you.
  • Refreshments and lunch will be provided for both days of training.
